Dear Mom and Dad,

The sandship is awful - the crew doesn't like it when passengers are on
deck 'cause then they get in the way and apparently sometimes fall off
the side, which sounds quite dangerous.  I can't practice at all here,
and it's so noisy it's hard to do anything.  I'm watching the sands go
by sometimes, but it got a bit old because it's almost always the same
(although sometimes you get a great view).  I've been reading when I
can manage to.

I've been cheating a little bit, using some magic so I can peek
outside and around the ship without actually, you know, going there.
Hopefully no one will notice, and it gives me a chance to figure out
how the ship works.  I still think sailing on sand is pretty weird,
even if everyone does it.

Sorry for the awful handwriting, but it's hard to keep a steady hand!
